Additional Food and Nutrition FAQs

We answer more of your questions about our food.

What makes your French Fries different?

Our World Famous Fries™ are famous because they’re cut from specially selected quality potato varieties such as the Russet Burbank. This makes for a wonderful fry: crispy and golden on the outside, fluffy on the inside. We also cook them in a vegetable oil blend cooking oil that contains Canola oil, which is one of the healthiest commonly-used cooking oils.

Are your French Fries actually cooked in the restaurant?

Our World Famous Fries™ are made from potatoes selected for their quality, taste and size. Our trusted suppliers cut, lightly par-fry and freeze them before sending to distribution centres via temperature-controlled trucks. They are then cooked in our special vegetable oil blend, so you get them crispy, hot and fresh.

How can I make an informed choice?

McDonald’s is committed to helping Canadians make informed dining choices.
We strive to do more by giving customers the power of choice when they visit one of our restaurants. McDonald’s Prepared for You cooking system allows you to customize your order to help you meet your individual dietary needs.

McDonald’s also offers an online Nutrition Calculator. This user-friendly tool allows you to select and view your favourite menu items. The Nutrition Calculator provides nutrition information specific to your food choices.

In addition to the Nutrition Calculator, in-restaurant nutrition information posters and tray liners are available to help customers in their efforts to maintain a balanced diet. In 2006, McDonald’s became the first quick-service restaurant to begin including nutrition information on the packaging of many of our menu items.

I have food allergies. How do I know which McDonald's products I can eat?

At McDonald's Canada, we have a long-standing commitment to food safety. Not only are we committed to developing products that do not include common allergens (where possible), but we also believe in providing consumers with the necessary information to make informed choices.

McDonald's provides a complete ingredient and nutrition breakdown, which is available in every McDonald's restaurant across Canada, and our online Nutrition Centre >.

By referencing Food Facts or our online Nutrition Centre prior to a purchase, consumers with allergies can identify any ingredients that may present sensitivity issues.

McDonald's is also a member of the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association's (CRFA) Allergy Aware program: a national initiative developed to raise consumer awareness of the special needs of people with food allergies. McDonald's displays the Allergy Aware symbol on the ingredient information available in our restaurants.

Due to increasing concerns about allergies, McDonald's introduced pre-packaged peanuts in all its restaurants to avoid the risk of cross-contamination.

If you have any further questions on this important topic, please contact our Customer Relations Department at (416) 446-3932.

Who ensures the quality of my McDonald's meal?

McDonald's meets or exceeds the strict standards set by all appropriate government and regulatory bodies. For example, our beef is purchased only from government-inspected and approved facilities.

At McDonald's, we take quality seriously and impose high standards on ourselves and our suppliers. These self-imposed standards are often more rigorous than those imposed on us by government and regulatory bodies.

Doesn’t McDonald’s food contain little-to-no nutritional value?

The McDonald’s menu offers a wide variety of items that contain key nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Some examples:

  • Happy Meals at McDonald’s contain important nutrients that growing children need, including calcium, iron, zinc, B vitamins, Vitamin C and other vitamins and minerals.

  • The grilled chicken is an excellent source of protein.
  • Entrée salads provide 2-3 servings of vegetables, according to Canada’s Food Guide1

Isn’t McDonald’s food over-processed and full of additives?

McDonald’s uses the minimal processes needed to deliver great-tasting quality and safe foods. Efforts are made to retain vitamins and minerals found naturally in the food.
